Our passion for history, Berlin, and people brought us to guiding. We are academically trained historians with diverse family backgrounds: We are both German citizens who live in Berlin as locals, but Torben was raised on Long Island and Carlos' mother hails from Costa Rica. This allows us to provide both an insider's and outsider's perspective on Berlin and Germany.
Our work over the last years has taken us beyond Berlin. When we are not guiding locally, we both lead tours for Rick Steves all across Europe. This has further broadened our perspective and enables us to place the city's history, as well as its crucial role in Europe today, in a wider context.
Each has his vices: Carlos is an avid fan of pre-1990s American television and consumes copious amounts of Apfelsaftschorle (a German drink he will happily introduce you to), while Torben is a sucker for ecclesiastical architecture and beer, as long as it is brewed according to the famous German Reinheitsgebot (Beer Purity Law) of 1516.
